PROVIDENCE, R.I.— from www.boston.com – A Rhode Island woman at the center of a theft case involving a suspended police chief is no longer working at the Satin Doll strip club and is looking for work, her attorney said Monday.
Justina Cardoso, 21, appeared briefly in Providence County Superior Court. A hearing to determine whether she violated her bail was postponed for the third time and is now scheduled for Nov. 22. She is charged with conspiracy and two counts of blackmail and extortion.
Defense attorney John Grasso said Cardoso is out of a job after trying to get hired elsewhere in the adult entertainment industry. He added Cardoso “needs to change her career anyway.” Satin Doll owner Richard Shappy said he didn’t know anything about her employment status. He added managers run the club for him.
Police say North Providence police Col. John Whiting [pictured] stole $714 from Cardoso’s purse following a police chase on Aug. 28. He has not entered a plea.
Cardoso told police she earned some of the money as a stripper. Grasso said she’s being treated for a “serious substance abuse problem.”
Grasso said state police returned the Ford Explorer involved in the car chase. He said Cardoso sold it because she could no longer afford to drive it.
