Tennessee Bill To Ban ‘Girls Gone Wild’ TV Ads Stalling

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A proposal that would ban late-night TV ads showing half-naked young women is stalling its second time through the Legislature.

The so-called “Girls Gone Wild” bill died in the House Civil Practice Subcommittee last year after passing unanimously in the Senate.

The legislation sponsored by Sen. Doug Jackson, D-Dickson, would fine cable and satellite companies up to $50,000 for airing ads for obscene products.

On Tuesday, the bill was delayed for three weeks to allow the chairman of the same subcommittee to get some clarification on a state attorney general’s opinion about the bill.

The opinion says most of the legislation appears lawful, but that there are sections that “may be subject to a constitutional challenge.”
