WHITTIER – www.whittierdailynews.com- An adult shop that raised the hackles of many Whittier residents when it opened last year has closed.
Good Time, which was located at 13425 Whittier Blvd., shuttered its doors May 28 after a little more than a year in business, officials said. With its scantily-clad window mannequins in the front window, the store’s opening touched off an angry reaction from hundreds of Whittier residents, prompting many residents to ask the city to shut the business down.
“I don’t think we should allow that, because most companies can do their business online,” said resident Mary Boltz, 62, who works near the store. “I don’t think we need to expose our kids to those kinds of things.”
As long as a business follows the law, a city cannot force them out, officials said.
“We did receive a number of complaints but they did operate legally within the confines of federal law,” said Jeff Collier, director of community development. “We cannot preclude that type of business if they follow the guidelines of federal court decisions.”
Mayor Joe Vinatieri said the store and the community did not mesh.
“They were inconsistent with a lot of the values that a lot of the people in our community share,” said City Councilman Joe Vinatieri. “Take that, and add that this is a difficult time for businesses in general.”
Shop owner Sang Wu Han could not be reached for comment.
Manager Dave Beattie of Le Sex Shoppe at Whittier and Norwalk boulevards said, while there is a lot of talk about the Internet negatively impacting adult stores, he hasn’t seen evidence of the trend.
“There’s a lot of talk about it but we’ve been doing fine,” he said.”
Cathy Warner will shed no tears for the departing business.
“Personally, I’m very happy it closed,” she said. “But if any business follows the parameters set by the city we are obligated to allow them to operate.”
