Gallatin, TN- Imagine Gallatin being taken over by dastardly villains determined to wipe out country music and a scantily clad crime-fighting superhero named Thong Girl coming to save the day.
Scenes from “Thong Girl 3: Revenge of the Dark Widow” depicting the risqué superhero – who flies and shoots laser beams from her buttocks – have been filmed in Mayor Don Wright’s office and more scenes are being planned elsewhere in the city. When asked about the movie, the mayor admits he gave filmmakers permission to use his office, but he hadn’t seen a script and didn’t know the movie involved Thong Girl.
“They told me it was a film about a superhero woman and there was no nudity or any kind of offensive stuff in the film,” Wright said.
The mayor said he supports filmmaking in Gallatin and that’s why he agreed to let crews use his office for the scenes.
“This is a chance for our people to get in the movies and make some money. I was excited about it,” Wright said.Thong Girl’s alter ego, Lana Layonme, went shopping at a lingerie store one day and put on a pair of red thong underwear, which gave her magical powers.
Donning thong underwear, the risqué superhero “polices the skies with an iron fist and a fiery butt” to keep Nashville safe, according the Thong Girl Web site at www.thonggirlfilms.com.
There you’ll find Thong Girl’s animated likeness and several photos of the actress portraying the thong-underwear-clad caped crusader in the film.
Wright logged onto the site after being questioned yesterday by The News Examiner and said he was “surprised” by what he found.
“I didn’t have a clue,” the mayor said.
Wright said he hasn’t seen any footage filmed in his office.
“If there’s something derogatory or sexual in it, I’m not pleased about anything like that being in my office. Of course nobody would want to see that,” the mayor said.
However, he said he didn’t see anything obscene.
“If this is all it is, you can turn on television any day of the week and see that,” Wright said.
In the movie, Thong Girl faces off against her nemesis, the Dark Widow, who’s out to take over country music and turn artists into rappers, White House filmmaker Glen Weiss said.
The film’s genre seems to fall between what you might find on the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim program and the old Batman television series.
Weiss said Gallatin is known for being friendly to independent filmmakers and the mayor was “friendly and helpful” in offering the use of city hall.
“He gave us the run of city hall,” Weiss said. “He unlocked city hall and told us to use whatever we needed. … We basically used the mayor’s office. We also used the exterior of the building.”
The mayor said he wasn’t present to let crews into city hall, but he had arranged for someone to let them into the building.
“It seems like I had a police officer or a fireman let them in,” Wright said. “I think I was out of town that Sunday. I had someone do that and stay with them while they were here.”
Weiss has also arranged with the mayor to close down the downtown square Oct. 1 to shoot a scene where a fictitious mayor presents Thong Girl the key to the city for saving Music City U.S.A. from the bad guys.
The character Thong Girl has been five years in the making. She originally began as part of a four-minute sketch on a comedy variety show on cable access in Nashville called “Stubby’s Place.”
Thong Girl has appeared in three comic books, picked up by Purrsia, an independent publisher and distributor, and these will be showcased at the Nashville Comic Book Convention Oct. 22-23 at the Nashville Fairgrounds, Weiss said.
The filmmaker has plans to release the movie straight to DVD and it would be made available in on the Web site, at comic book conventions and video stores.
He’s looking to premiere Thong Girl 3 at The Palace in Gallatin and at the Belcourt Theater in Nashville in January.
“I was looking forward to seeing it in The Palace Theatre,” Wright said. “Now I definitely want to see what the devil I’ve gotten myself into.”
