SANTA ANA – from www.oclnn.com – Testimony is expected to begin today in the trial of a Newport Beach man charged with killing a liquor store owner who confronted him about a shoplifted pornographic magazine.
Weston Scott Kruger, 31, is charged with murder and a special circumstance allegation of murder during a robbery.
Kruger allegedly stole a magazine from Sportsman Liquor Store at 2615 Newport Blvd. on July 28, 2007 and, when store owner Hao Huynh confronted him, the much larger Kruger shoved Huynh with such force that hit his head on the ground, according to prosecutors. Huynh died from head injuries the next day.
A witness, who happened to have gone to high school with Kruger, identified Kruger as the aggressor, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Video of what happened also was recovered from the store’s surveillance system.
At the time of his arrest, Kruger was free on bail pending trial for allegedly attacking his live-in girlfriend in 2006 and for allegedly pointing a gun at a man in his Aliso Viejo home in April of 2007 while allegedly pretending to be a police officer, according to prosecutors.
In the assault case, Kruger was accused of pushing his girlfriend’s face into a bowl of wet dog food and hitting on an arm with a metal pole, according to prosecutors.
Kruger will begin standing trial this week for all of those alleged crimes, according to court records.
