from www.twincities.com – Plans for Oakdale’s notorious “porn prom” are proceeding – at a scaled-down level.
Mike Stone, who earned national attention when two internet pornography stars agreed to be his prom dates, is planning a party at his house on Saturday, May 12.
But it will not be as lavish as the alternative prom he envisioned happening in downtown St. Paul. “The big prom thing isn’t happening, but all my friends want to come,” said Stone, an 18-year-old senior.
His party will be on the same date as the official prom of his school, Tartan High School.
Stone is receiving national publicity for his efforts to salvage his last prom.
He said a camera crew from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” came to his house April 22 to film a segment about him. Comedy Central announced that the segment, with new correspondent Jessica Williams, is tentatively scheduled to air Thursday, May 10.
Stone has become a kind of folk hero for his efforts. He said his classmates congratulate him in the halls and have made T-shirts saying “Porn Prom.”
Recent Twitter messages to him, from across the country, include: “You sir are a legend!” “I support U Bruh!! You have so much swag!” “Grats on being pretty much the most awesome teen in the world.”
The climb to fame began in December. Stone, who has never been to a prom, knew he had one last chance to go. He asked 12 girls to be his date, and all of them refused.
So in January and February, he sent Twitter messages to about 400 porn
stars, asking them. Two of them agreed.
When school officials said that his dates would not be allowed at the official prom, Stone started planning for an alternative prom. His idea was to rent space near the Landmark Center official prom site so classmates could wander between the two parties.
However, his fundraising didn’t go as well as planned. Despite promises of thousands of dollars in cash, limo services and restaurants, Stone said only $300 has been donated.
He said the two porn stars are still coming, but the event will be more subdued. “It will be like a graduation party,” he said.
