I couldn’t come up with a title to this rant because it’s so hard to be realistic in this time of panic in our business. I was going to call this piece, “Stop All The Nonsense” but that’s a dumb title considering no matter what I or anyone else says, nonsense will continue well after this HIV crisis has ended.
I don’t pretend to be “in the know” or an expert on any of these subjects and I certainly don’t need to be quoted in the mainstream trades about my thoughts on the issues–hence why I avoided questions from all the media at Thursday’s AIM Press Conference. Asking the mainstream press to quote “credible” sources is a little unrealistic so I won’t take them to task either for using interviews from people in the JizBizz that should just keep their mouths shut on camera.
I will say this however…If you are just getting started in your adult industry career, you have a love for the business like many of us do and you’re hoping we climb out of this ugly situation, feel free to participate in open discussion at meetings, among friends and with industry insiders. It is your right and your ideas may influence some positive changes in the way things are moving along now.
At the same token, if you are of less experience, as I am, less knowledge of many of the legends and people with great history in this business, don’t take this opportunity to get your name in the mainstream publications by answering questions from non-adult reporters. Quite honestly, some of the newcummers they’re quoting are making this business and all the great people in it, look like shit.
The mainstream press is very dangerous. They will take your quotes and turn them against you. They play to what they think the public wants. They did it to Belladonna, they’ve been doing it to respected industry people during this crisis. If you speak out of turn and are a little “off” in your comments, they will destroy you too–and YOU represent ALL porners when you are seen on the nightly news.
Dave Pounder, I really like the guy because he’s so nice and has a good sense of humor. But he shouldn’t be labeled a “producer” and spokesperson for the industry in the Associated Press. Does he have a right to his opinion? Absolutely. But here’s a guy who doesn’t have the experience to be considered a spokesperson to the mainstream. He certainly has the right to his voice, he most certainly can add his opinions and comments to the adult biz circle, but watching the press quote him in hundreds of national news publications kind of pisses me off. How many films did he produce? Two, Four, Six? How many did he perform in as male talent? 20, 25, 30?
He claims the industry should be federally regulated and that condoms should be mandatory. Did he use condoms in all his scenes? No. For someone so strong in support of condoms, wouldn’t you think he would be wearing them when he shot? Thankfully the mainstream press didn’t find his comments important enough to further research that because had they done so, you would have scene his patriotic soundbytes destroyed by a reporter who wanted to cast another stone at the adult biz.
It’s not just in this HIV crisis either. The way mainstream views us is in part the way we allow them to. People constantly say that the right wing this and the right wing that has a mission to show that we’re all gross, disgusting people with no care for our health or the health of others and that the things we do on camera are harmful to those who view it. Yaddy yaddy yaddy. Ya know what? In some instances, the things we do on camera ARE ridiculous!
Between the things girls allow Stern to do to them on mainstream TV and Radio combined with the stupid appearances some of stars make, we do show the mainstream public that we’re a bunch if idiots at times. I will never tell anyone to turn down appearances. Being in radio, I think there is great value to doing Stern, Mancow, etc. But what you do on those appearances is ultimately up to you. When Jenna Jameson goes on Stern, does he flush her head down the toilet? No. She won’t have it. But he still has her on because she’s a fun guest, sexy, smart and still playful. [Of course I realize she has turned down recent interviews with Stern…but that also may further my point.]
When you agree to appear somewhere, first make sure you have a good grip on what their game plan is. When guests come on my show on www.KSEXradio.com, many of them ask, “what should I expect?” I tell them the exact schedule of the show. First we interview you all about you, anything you want to promote. Then we ask you to stick around and continue to participate in the show. We usually play improv games and misc. contests, etc., etc. Regardless, these folks know the basics of what to expect.
When scheduling appearances, you have the right to ask for the basics and if you decide to go ahead with the show, should they change the rules on you [a frequent occurrence with Jenny Jones and other daytime talk shows] you have a right to decline participation.
Mary Carey on Leno the other night was NOT “a mainstream victory for the adult business” as someone put it on one of the message boards. It was embarrassing. I like Mary, we’ve had our trysts but overall, she’s very nice. But the purpose of Mary on Leno was to show her as a complete idiot. It worked, she looked like a complete idiot. Unfortunately, Mary’s appearance then gives the mainstream public the opinion that ALL the girls in porn are idiots. They are NOT.
I thought it was interesting that they showed Hannah Harper in the background during that bit. In my opinion, Harper is one of the smartest women in the biz. Sexy, witty, fun and incredibly intelligent. Good thing she didn’t take the stage in that light.
If we want more respect from the mainstream world, we need to represent ourselves in a fashion that shows the mainstream world that we deserve their respect.
There are so many producers, directors, writers, performers and company owners that have been in this biz through A LOT of changes. Step back from the mainstream mics and allow these people to represent us properly. All of our futures in porn may depend on the respect we give to those who know better then us.
