from www.suntimes.com – A Will County divorce court judge was reassigned following revelations in the Chicago Sun-Times that his county computer account was repeatedly used in an attempt to view hardcore pornography.
Associate Judge Joseph Polito, 69, was given new duties April 24 — just a day after details were published of how his computer login was used to try to visit hundreds of sex sites including chubbyparade.com, hugeheavybreasts.com and teenagesextape.com.
Acting Chief Judge Richard C. Schoenstedt said he “temporarily” moved Polito from the county’s main courthouse in Joliet after reading the Sun-Times article.
In divorce court, Polito would have had to handle “court calls that by their nature are adversarial and where the issue of gender is often central,” Schoenstedt said.
“Given the content of the article, it just seemed to make sense” to move Polito to the county’s branch courts, where he will instead hear misdemeanor, building code enforcement and mental health cases, Schoenstedt added.
His new assignment is scheduled to run through December.
Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act last month showed that someone using Polito’s county computer account tried to view porn at least 243 times during a six-month period starting late 2010. Though each attempt was blocked by software designed to stop county employees wasting taxpayer time, the county’s technology chief said it was possible that other attempts had been successful.
Polito at the time declined to comment on his workplace Internet habits. He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
The new duties for Polito were announced days after Chief Judge Gerald R. Kinney referred the porn investigation to the Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board, which has the power to file charges that could result in Polito being suspended or even fired.
