Will AVN Politics Kill The ‘King’?

On their KSEX radio show Tuesday night, Tim Case said it had been a subject that was irritating him: awards nominations, and Felicia Fox’s possible exclusion from them.

Case was referring to Guy Capo’s new movie, American Gunk: The Shit That Killed the King. Case said it was a good movie. “It’s one of the few porn movies I’ve actually watched most of the way through.” Case acknowledged that Fox had done a kickass solo masturbation scene in it. “Everyone that has reviewed it so far, singled that out.” Case thought I went a little overboard by saying it was one of the best solo scenes ever committed to tape. [Style-wise, no question about it.]

“Gene’s been in the business a long time,” Fox acknowledged graciously. “He’s seen a lot of porn. I take that as a compliment.” Sadly, Case believes the scene will never be nominated for an award. Case said in the porn industry there’s one award which means more than any other- the AVN’s. “Your scene will never be nominated,” Case told Fox who was well aware of it. “Because of the falling out between Extreme and AVN,” she ventured to guess. Case said it boils down to one word: politics. Fox begged off an opinion on that, stating that she didn’t know exactly what had gone down between Extreme and AVN. Fox said she was brand new at the time. “And Extreme was pretty on top when I first broke in,” she said. “They were doing really well.”

Fox first started shooting magazine covers in May, 1999 and went on the feature circuit in October, 1999. In the fall of 2000, Fox shot her first scene, according to Case. Case also recapped how Fox came to the adult industry’s attention when Den at CAVR suggested that Fox post pictures to the then geneross.com website. Case said as soon as that happened, interest came pouring in. Case said a meeting with Michael Raven didn’t go very far, for reasons he didn’t elaborate. Fox had a meeting with Extreme and was offered a contract. But because she didn’t do anal and insisted on condoms, those talks didn’t go far, either.

Fox, laughing, said she was too vanilla that she wanted to do couples tapes, features and work with pretty boys. Case noted that I had left AVN and went to Extreme.

“And [he, Gene] just whammed AVN. A lot of stuff that he claims went on behind the scenes at AVN which a lot of people say kind of under their breath, which none of it, of course, has ever been proved. And none of it is ever going to be proved. A lot of it is just, a lot of this. I’m not saying Gene’s making any of it up. I’m not saying AVN’s making any of it up. Who the hell knows. You work at any place long enough you hear a lot of shit. And we’re all human beings and things go on everywhere. You believe who you want to believe.”

Case went on to say that because of the falling out between myself and AVN, there’s this ‘taint’ that anything associated with Gene Ross or Extreme…Case didn’t finish his statement. Fox notes that American Gunk didn’t come out from Extreme but from Tom Byron’s new company, Evolution Erotica.

“But because Tom Byron was part-owner of Extreme, he got tagged with it to.” Case said that was part of the taint he was talking about because Byron’s linked to Rob Black, not exactly one of AVN’s favorite people. “Now Tom Byron has started this company, Evolution, and people pretty much saying it’s the same thing.” Fox said the company’s been putting out good product. “The stuff’s really nice.” Case said it’s exactly what he’s talking about, that it’s not about the product. “This is not about saying that you, Felicia Fox, did a great job on film. We’re going to recognize you. It’s not about that. It’s politics. Welcome to the porn world.”

Fox said the tough thing to bear is the fact that even if you’re reliable and put out good hot sex scenes, it doesn’t matter. “After a couple of years I realized that had nothing to fucking do with it. That girls get picked up for contracts that have put out not so hot sex scenes, mainly because they look good on boxes.”

Case said that’s the point. “I think it’s marketing and your p.r. stunts,” Fox continued, and pointed to the Mary Carey campaign for governor as one of those stunts that will certainly advance Carey’s career. Case cited the career of Jenna Jameson as an example of that but erred when he said Wicked Pictures started with her. [They started with Chasey Lain.] It was Fox’s opinion, that despite jokes to the contrary, she believes that Jameson puts out pretty hot sex scenes.

Fox said, granted everyone would like to be recognized, but she hasn’t been disappointed by her career so far. Fox said if she never wins an award for porn performing, she loves the business, anyway.
