Reports coming in from all over the web indicate that the industry fears that the XXX domain would be the first step towards segregating porn sites into a “ghetto” where they can be safely deleted.

The idea of .XXX is that pornsites would be put in a red-light district away from the wandering eyes of children and teenagers. Parents would be able to use the system to help block access to porn sites. However religious and other anti-porn groups worry that “.xxx” would legitimise porn sites. They want all smut off the internet and people to have cold baths instead.

Australian Sex Party convener Fiona Patten [pictured] said the entire porn industry was against a .xxx suffix particularly down under as the Australian government is thinking of filtering everything that moves and she thinks a .xxx domain would be the first to be banned. Since the .xxx would be voluntary it would be unlikely have much effect on parents’ ability to block porn sites so others think it is just another way for ICANN to make a bit of cash.
