> I got word this morning that Woody Varner, owner of Antares, a company that specialized in foreign licensing of adult product has passed away. Varner may have been about 52 from what I’m told and died of kydney and liver failure. Varner had been in the hospital for the past few weeks and was actually scheduled to be released later this week.

Varner started Antares in 1993 and in recent years turned to licensing gay product when the mainstream field had become overcrowded.

This afternoon I spoke to Woody’s partner in Antares, Steve. “This is a hideous nightmare,” said Steve who told me that Woody passed away around 3:30 AM Wednesday morning.

“He went to the hospital on November 2nd for kidney failure,” said Steve who noted that Varner got progressively worse, that his liver went and matters were complicated even more by a staph infection. “That’s what really did it.” Varner had been hospitalized prior for heart problems and wore a pacemaker. Steve said Varner went out gracefully and was being given morphine.

Steve said he’s been in contact with a lot of Woody’s close friends. “I didn’t want them to hear it second-hand. Four o’clock this morning it was easy to get people in Amsterdam and Montreal and let them know.”

Varner had started his career in the adult industry at CDi where he was the assistant to the vice president.

According to information that Steve has, Woody’s family is arranging private services and is to be cremated and buried at sea.
