from www.detnews.com – Detroit— The Miami Companions madam who helped run one of the country’s largest prostitution rings until it was busted last year in Detroit should spend one year and a day in prison, federal prosecutors said today.

The request was filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit, where Laurie Carr will be sentenced June 28 along with the sex ring’s former office manager, Michelle Matarazzo. Prosecutors also today recommended a seven-month sentence for Matarazzo.

Carr pleaded guilty Oct. 22 to conspiracy to coerce and entice prostitution and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Her guidelines call for a 21-27 months in prison, but prosecutors were willing to recommend less time if she provided substantial help prosecuting others involved in the sex ring.

Carr was involved in helping run the business and participated in a conspiracy to launder money, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Blackwell wrote in a sentencing memo filed today.

“The defendant was also very involved in the commission of both conspiracies for a significant period of time, and profited from the money earned by the business through the illegal activities of the women engaging in acts of prostitution,” Blackwell wrote. “A sentence of imprisonment is necessary in deterring this kind of criminal activity.”

In the case, prosecutors seized a client database of more than 30,000 customers — including a rock star and a Washington lobbyist — who paid as much as $500-an-hour to have sex with Miami Companions prostitutes.

It is unclear if the book will ever be made public.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office labeled Miami Companions one of the country’s largest escort services, dispatching dozens of prostitutes to hotels and beachfront villas around the world. And Metro Detroit was one of the busiest stops on the tour.

Clients spent more than $167,000 for sex between March 2007 and January 2009, according to federal prosecutors.

Carr’s ex-husband, Miami Companions co-owner Greg Carr,[also pictured] was sentenced to 14 months in prison last month. That’s about half of the 27 months in prison sought by federal prosecutors.

Former prostitute Nayubet Swaso received probation.

Greg Carr’s girlfriend, Fabiola Contreras, a former Miami Companions prostitute, pleaded guilty in federal court last month. She could spend six months in prison when sentenced Aug. 12 on a misdemeanor charge of helping to employ illegal immigrants who worked as prostitutes for Miami Companions.
