Another Porn Fiasco Hits Cable TV

LIMA, Ohio – from www.limaohio.com – A day later, Laura Ulrick was still upset.

She and her three children sat down to watch a “Star Wars” movie on television Thursday night. The timing was perfect. The Spike channel was showing it at 5 p.m., so the kids wouldn’t be kept up late.

The 31-year-old mother will never forget what happened as the movie progressed: graphic pornography suddenly popped onto the screen. She ran to change the channel, only to find the image frozen on the screen.

“I don’t know how to describe it without being graphic, but I am furious,” Ulrick said.

She said she talked to her cable provider, Time Warner Cable, and they were completely unhelpful. She explained she was watching the film through her digital cable box.

“Their half-hearted apology isn’t cutting it,” she said. “I want them to do something about it and be forced to come up with some explanation.”

Her children are still uneasy after seeing the images, Ulrick said. Her 11-year-old daughter didn’t even want to return to the living room and had her head in her hands. One of her sons said he couldn’t get the image out of his head.

Pat McCauley, communications manager at Time Warner, said their company acts only as a transmitter of programming and can’t control what Spike puts on television.

“I spoke with someone at Spike and they think it was probably a promotional clip for a new online series they have called PG Porn,” McCauley said.

Ulrick said that couldn’t have been possible because she flipped to numerous other channels and the image was frozen on the screen. It wasn’t until Time Warner reset her cable box that the image disappeared.

“When I turned my cable box off the image was still on the TV, and usually that would have turned the TV off,” Ulrick said. “I don’t think the Federal Communications Commission would allow a commercial like that run.”

Ulrick said a nude woman was bent over with the camera just inches from the woman’s body as she engaged in a sexual act.

“It was something Triple X that you would only find in a scuzzy store behind a black curtain,” she said. “It wasn’t even remotely proper.”

Time Warner reported no other complaints and couldn’t guarantee Ulrick that it wouldn’t happen again.

“They weren’t reassuring and gave me no answers,” Ulrick said.
