from www.myfoxchicago.com - Brigham Young University forward Brandon Davies is expected to play next season after being suspended for violating the Mormon school's honor code by having premarital sex, the Deseret News reported Friday.
Davies has withdrawn from school, and is currently working with the dean of students on a plan to re-enroll for the fall semester. He must meet certain conditions in order to be allowed back.
"Our hope is that these conditions will be met by fall semester, 2011," said BYU spokesperson Carri Jenkins. "If so, he will be able to return to school. Our hope is that he will be able to suit up for the 2011-12 season. Again, that's if he has met the conditions to return to the university."
Davies, a key frontcourt player for the Cougars, was suspended March 1 after admitting to school officials he had premarital sex with his girlfriend. At the time, BYU was 27-2, ranked third in the country and a contender for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
"There's a pretty long list of people that I'd like to thank who are helping me through this difficult time," Davies said in a statement Friday. "It's been very hard emotionally but thanks to the love and support of many, I'll be able to get through it. There's a plan in place, and I intend to follow through and return to BYU in the fall. I'm looking forward to coming back to school to continue my education and getting back on the court."
The 6-foot-9 sophomore averaged 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds, starting 26 games for BYU. Following his suspension, BYU lost two if its final five games before the NCAA Tournament.
Led by Wooden Award winner Jimmer Fredette, the team still received a No. 3 seed, but was ousted by Florida in the Sweet 16.
