Conversations with Elizabeth Starr: “I Get Felt Up a Lot When I go to Women’s Bathrooms”

Porn Valley- Depending what tape measure you’re using, Elizabeth Starr’s either a 36 O or a 44 Double-I.

“But nobody knows what a 36 O is,” laughs Starr. Like they would know from a Double-I, either.

I spoke to Starr of Starr Productions recently. Starr’s been working on a long in-the-works project called Rock N’ Porn. She describes it as different from her usual bill of fare. Another of Starr’s features, Faster Pussycat! Fuck! Fuck! won an AVN award for Best Specialty Release.

“That was a tribute and comedic,” says Starr, acknowledging the late Russ Meyer classic which she remade in the porn way.

“He was a great man,” Starr continues, mentioning how the movie was in pre-production even before Meyer passed away.

“That was a great shock to me when that happened,” she states. “I had wanted to do it for a number of years and that was right after I made Busted. It was a lot of work. I had to go back to the original location and I was lucky to be on it before the people that own the property now started changing it.”

Talk to Starr, she’ll tell you her features have a Benny Hill edge to them.

“To that extent Rock N’Porn is a bit different,” Starr explains, describing herself as a metal head chick in high school who had a band and was out of control.

“I’ve always been a rocker.”

This time around in Rock N’ Porn, Starr decided to try something different including using interviews intermixed with parties and sex scenes. Of course in the cast, Starr includes her boyfriend Tommy Gunn [the original] who’s a rocker.

“So it’s like an MTV music video kind of thing and very different,” she assesses. “It’s not your typical porn. It’s geared to people who grew up in the Hollywood music scene 20 years ago and went to all the rock clubs and who like those kinds of bands. We also have stuff for the younger kids who relate to bands like Static X and who want to see some pretty chicks.”

To trumpet it’s release, Starr ’s trying to get a promotional party set up in Los Angeles for April 22 to coincide with The Vice Club’s rock night.

“We were thinking that might be good and fit that genre.”

Starr who would normally put out four titles a month is down now to two. However she’ll continue with the company’s popular series such as Lady Ass Lickers. Starr’s on Volume 20 of that right now.

“I’m in the process of one more scene to shoot with Regan Anthony and Totally Tabitha,” she notes.

Busty Mature Vixens 5 is also ready to come out.

Starr went to school for television production and began Starr Productions five years ago.

“Back in the Eighties it was really hard to get an internship, so I ended up getting married and helping my ex,” she says. Starr explains it as taking a chance, but she went out and got a loan to buy the library of a fetish company she had worked for.

“The owner was going to go out of business and he approached me to buy it,” recalls Starr.

“I did and started out with over 300 titles. Then I looked for a building to do business in. I found a property in Hollywood on Frankiln and Highland which was in the center of everything. I thought it would be a good thing and very creative for me. I didn’t want to be just a porn company but do ‘B’ movies as well, so I figured I could do both. Little did I know it’s a lot easier said than done.”

Starr Productions remained at that location until this past January, but Starr also realized it was necessary to bend with the times.

“The industry has changed so much and units are down across the board for new releases,” Starr reflects. “It’s the decline from the DVD and you don’t need buildings like that any more.”

At its height, Starr Productions had 11 employees on payroll but Starr says that it was too much stress for her.

“So we built a studio on my property for post, plus we have a place to shoot and have office space,” she says.

In another decision she just made recently, Starr pulled her product from Pacific Coast and went back to her own in-house distribution.

“Otherwise it’s mostly VOD and cable licensing and content licensing,” says Starr. “I was looking to go bigger than life, and we were doing really well a couple of years ago; then all the stress got to me. But I’m still here and I’m still going to make features.”

Starr’s also working on another project tentatively titled Agent Porn Star.

“There’s a comic book that goes with it,” she points out. “That’s been in the works for like five years and has been pushed back a little because of the move.”

Starr gets a lot of her stage fervor from her mother who was in show business. Mom used to dance on the stage along with Tempest Storm in Vegas for Minsky’s Burlesque.

“My mother was very glamorous and very Marilyn Monroe-like,” says Starr. “She did a lot of television work and Playboy work and from Day One I was theatrical and took dancing lessons, the whole thing.”

At the age of five, Starr wrote her first play in kindergarten.

“I got the whole class involved and we ended up doing the play in the school theater,” Starr recalls, laughing. “The thing about it was, I don’t think they expected to see a bunch of kindergartners in Can Can skirts. My mother had saved them from the days she danced on stage, so I had a bunch of Can Can girls. It was a saloon with a bar, so I think pretty much I was geared as a sexual being.

“At the same time I’m pretty creative, theatrical and not afraid to take chances. Otherwise I wouldn’t be doing this.”

Her silhouette developing rapidly, Starr, inheriting her mother’s figure, had her first sexual experience at the age of 14.

“The funny thing is that most people through junior high thought I wasn’t a virgin,” she recalls. “All the girls thought I was experienced. I was a natural D so I think it had something to do with it. For some reason they thought, oh, she knows what she’s doing. But I wasn’t experienced.”

Starr’s boyfriend at the time spent the night with her, her parents being out of town. The scene was right out of a Porky’s movie.

“The funny thing about it is I didn’t think they were coming back,” says Starr. “So my boyfriend had to sneak out of my bedroom window naked as my dad was coming in the bedroom door. It’s the truth. I was scared to death. My dad’s banging on the door yelling I know you’ve got somebody in there. I’m going, get out the window! My boyfriend’s trying to put his pants on at the same time going out the window. I think he fell in the bush. I was a bad girl.”

Starr then went on to become a feature dancer and stripped her way through college. Or what there was of college.

“I was also a regular swimsuit and convention model,” says Starr who got discovered by the head of the Score Group while she was working in Vegas.

“I was doing local television commercials like 1-800,” laughs Starr. “Come on, guys, rub your engines, call me now. I was doing those kinds of commercials.”

When Starr began entering swimsuit competitions is when the men’s magazines began taking notice.

She was asked to model, upon which, her photos were submitted to 17 different men’s publications.

“They all published them,” says Starr who then went on to do Hustler’s Busty Beauties. Starr later moved to Los Angeles and tried to work her way into the mainstream.

“But I got tired of standing in casting lines,” she notes. Being a super busty blond woman, Starr figured that people were going to hire her for fluff, non-eventful comedic shtick, so she ended up in the adult business.

“I understood the sex industry- I’m good at it I guess,” reflects Starr. “And I’m good at shooting movies and writing. I’m a good camera woman and I know about the adult industry.”

Before Starr Productions came into being, Starr herself shot for companies like Vivid, VCA and Big Top.

Pretty much everyone,” she says. “I particularly enjoyed working for Sam Xavier. He was great- him and his daughter Robyn. They were really terrific. I also shot for Robbie D when he was first starting out. He was nice to work with, as well as Jim Powers. He was nice to me.”

As you would expect, Starr creates a certain amount of consternation when she steps out in public.

“You have to have a sense of humor about it,” she says, recalling times that women would hit on her.

“Usually people are doing the double-take but I get more hit on by women than I do guys,” she points out. “It’s amazing how those very innocent-looking girls behave once they get a couple of drinks and see you in the women’s bathroom. They’re instantly like, ‘My God! Can I touch those things?’ I get felt up a lot when I go to women’s bathrooms at a club. I need a security guard.”

Starr’s boyfriend Tommy Gunn is the original Tommy Gunn. Asked how he feels about the reconstituted Tommy, Starr, speaking on his behalf, says he’s really pissed.

“And the other Tommy knows it,” says Starr. “So every time Tommy sees Tommy he avoids him.”

[Which is all pretty funny because the upstart Tommy Gunn was supposed to be suing Tommy Pistol.]

“I can understand that he’s taken the name and succeeded with his career to the level that he’s at,” Starr goes on to say. “But he knew that Tommy was in the industry, and he knew that Tommy was taking a hiatus. I guess he thought he wasn’t coming back into the industry.

“But Tommy [Starr’s Tommy] did 300 films before he left for a few years. So the other Tommy Gunn probably thought if he picked the name that already had some recognition, it would be a lot easier to push himself into the industry. Then, again, I don’t know. That totally throws me.

“And Tommy’s been a really good sport about it. I guess it is what it is. But to me it would be embarrassing that all the people know the other Tommy took somebody else’s name. He knew. A lot of people are going why did you pick Tommy Gunn? This is a bad thing. But I’m not trying to slam the other guy. I’m sure that he’s a nice person. I just think that’s a sleazy, chicken shit thing to do. Be yourself and be original. It’s a sore subject and I get upset. Because I love my man and I don’t lie watching him being upset.”
