Conversations with Mai Lin

Las Vegas- I had a couple of conversations with Mai Lin this week. The first one was as she was chasing an errant eyelash in her Vegas hotel room. We talked a little bit about the late Jim Holliday. Lin knew him in better days but wasn’t aware that Holliday had died.

Lin, who keeps her present whereabouts on a need to know basis, is in town to be inducted into the Legends of Erotica at Ray Pistol’s Showgirl Video Friday.

“When did they start this cement-thing?” Lin wanted to know, also wondering, from a practical standpoint, if the store ever got sold, would the new owner keep the cement. Interesting question. Lin, who’s been involved with the development of Rhonda Jo Petty’s website, www.classicexoticstars.net, confesses that one of these days she may actually get a computer. “When I have time- but not today, maybe tomorrow.” Lin said she likes writing the old fashioned way.

“I’m not going to spend money on a computer until I see that the business is going to do well,” she explains. “For me it’s going to take time to learn how to do it. I’m going to have to learn how to re-type again and the keyboards are a little different.” Lin said she’s not afraid of the new world of electronics but only has 24 hours in a day. “But, unfortunately I happen to sleep 12 hours or less in a day,” she laughs. “But I’ve beern waiting for the time when people used to tell me as you get older, you sleep less. But as I’m getting older, I’m sleeping more! Somebody was lying to me.”

As we get into the interview, Lin is saying that she’s still trying to figure what she wants to be when she grows up. But first things first. There’s Friday night.

“Well, you know that I’m going to be putting my hands into cement this Friday,” she chuckles. Lin first thought she could get away with wearing a pair of jeans or slacks for the event. “But Rhonda says, no, you’re supposed to be wearing a dress. I’m going, they want me to put my body in cement, wear a dress? They’re crazy! Then she tells me they’re going to have a towel for you. Well, if I’m going to wear a dress I’m not going to stick my body in cement. So they’re just going to get my hands.”

Lin makes a point of the fact that she doesn’t do personal appearances very often. “So you can tell people if they want a chance to see me, it may be 15 years before they can drag me out of my cave again.”

Though she’s been to trade shows in the past, Lin said she’s never really had the chance to walk around one and may do so Thursday before all hell breaks loose with the fans coming in over the weekend. Lin will be appearing at the PAW booth through Sunday.

“But I forgot to bring my 8 x 10’s that Rhonda wanted me to sign,” she sighs. “But that’s okay. They can order them on the Internet.” Lin also has her own site, as well. “It’s part of The Classic Exotic Stars,” she says. “But if they go to my site which is. www.mailin4u.com they can order them.”

Lin talks about being at Erotica LA this past summer. “That was very interesting,” she said. “That’s when we were trying to set up our own business. We’re still learning and there was some unscrupulous people that we did some business with. We weren’t paying any attention so it was certainly our fault.”

“Rhonda Jo was telling me that you had some major problems with webmasters,” I said.

“Are we allowed to give out names of horrible people?” Lin asks coyly. I encouraged her to do so.

“That was Russell Berry,” recalls Lin. “He was trying to get into the adult business, too. Rhonda found him on the Megan’s Law website. If he is your neighbor…”

“…Lock up your underaged daughters,” reply.

“I don’t know what the legal laws are,” says Lin. “But people can always contact Rhonda because she has more information about it. Me, I have my website, too. But I don’t have a computer though I have other helpers. That’s why I don’t answer all my e-mails as yet. But I have helpers who read them.”

As personal experience has taught her, Lin will never get into public conversations about her family. “The information does get around, and, before I know it, my family is being approached and hurt out there.”

The last time Lin worked in front of a camera was maybe ten, eleven years ago, according to her. And the inevitable question of what she’s been doing in the mean time surfaces. “And it’s the same answer as before,” she smiles. “I’m still trying to find myself. But I also have a lot of boyfriends that take very good care of me. I also do some phone sex but I don’t do it under my name. Community standards.”

Lin references the term “community standards” quite often throughout our chat. I feel like I’m talking to a Supreme Court judge. That’s why Lin says she also keeps pretty mum about the phone sex part because she doesn’t want information falling back on her family. After she lends a couple of examples, you can understand why she’s reluctant to do so. Then she talks about the time a stalker put a pipe bomb in the tail pipe of her car in front of her sister’s house.

“I was visiting my sister,” she explains. “Somebody blew up my car in a residential area. Thank goodness it malfunctioned. It shook up the car a little, made a really big noise and could have hurt some kids.” Lin suspects that it was because she was a porn performer, that the cops never pursued the case. Lin’s again with the community standards making a point for why certain laws are selectively enforced. Porn star, ergo, no justice.

“The police department are fans of me but they’re under so much pressure from the community,” she says. “They wouldn’t even take finger prints of the car which is highly unusual. Before I was a porn star I had radios stolen out of my car and they took finger prints. But when I became a porn star, they blow you up, they don’t take finger prints.”

Another scary incident involved a girl friend of hers who had thoughts about getting into the adult business. “Then her neighbors found out what she was doing. They actually burned her cat and dog live on her front porch. This is what a lot of people don’t understand. Even though it’s illegal for somebody to blow my car up, the police don’t have to investigate. All they have to do is come out. Even though they set her animals on fire, which is illegal, they don’t have to set an active time to go after them. And she had to move out of the are because they were harassing her kids too much. After that incident she just went into hiding. But she still has family in the area. But people don’t understand this is what we deal with.”
