ASHEVILLE, NC — from www2.wspa.com – Asheville Police arrested and charged a convicted sex offender who they say was operating a carnival ride at the Asheville Mall.

Police arrested Matthew David Thomas, 31, of Candler, for knowingly operating the Wiggle Worm children’s ride as a convicted sex offender.

While investigating another incident, Police observed Thomas operating the ride with the controls that start and stop the ride. Thomas was wearing a teal polo shirt with the name Smoky Mountain Amusements on the front and once they verified Thomas was a registered sex offender, detectives contacted the District Attorney’s office and were advised that North Carolina law prohibits registered sex offenders from operating carnival rides.

Thomas was taken into custody and transported to the Buncombe County Detention Center. He was charged with the offense and is in custody on a $4,000 bond.
