New Mexico- The man who pleaded guilty to heading up a prostitution ring in Albuquerque learned Wednesday that will be under house arrest until he is sentenced later this year.
James Bays pleaded guilty to seven felonies on February 6 and admitted that he operated Desert Divas and recruited prostitutes from the University of New Mexico.
“I was the manager of Desert Divas New Mexico,” the 41-year-old Bays to District Judge Stanley Whitaker at the time.
On Wednesday, Whitaker allowed Bays to leave the Metropolitan Detention Center and stay at home with his fiancée and child until he's sentenced.
“We have a big hammer over him if he does anything to change his conditions or violate his conditions,” said prosecutor Mark Drebing.
Under the conditions imposed by Whitaker, bays will be monitored electronically and by GPS and he will face weekly drug and alcohol tests.
Whitaker warned Bays not to have any contact with any of three other people facing charges in connection with the Desert Divas operation or with any of the women involved in prostitution.
Bays is facing up to 12 years in prison at final sentencing, which is scheduled for April.
