The party line is that Deen reminds people of the boy girls had a crush on at Jewish summer camp. Confusingly, the “party” isn’t just Semitic women: It’s everybody.

Interview magazine is seduced by his “potent blend of charisma and sex.” Feminist website Jezebel sees him as the “permanent crush of all straight ladydom.” The New York fking Times describes him and his penis as “well endowed and sensitive” and lauds his professionalism: “He was never late, and his behavior was always fastidious.”

Deen was famously cast for mainstream film The Canyons, written by Bret Easton Ellis, which looks wretched but won’t adversely affect his booming porn career even if hype of his arrival in Hollywood turns out to be misleading.

James Deen is a porn star who embraces his lifestyle without seeming creepy, a man who engages in onscreen fisting scenes and still comes off as adorable and unthreatening on his Twitter account. He makes watchable porn. He inspires prose like “He will literally charm the pants off you.” His porn origin story involves being inspired by Jenna Jameson during a call-in radio program:

“So some guy calls in for like the millionth time and says, ‘I wanna do porn. How do I get into the industry?’ And she’s been listening to this shit all night. She’s frustrated. She goes, ‘You wanna do porn? Go get a folding chair and sit in a room with twenty people and jerk off for an hour. And if you can keep hard, and when one of them yells “Come!” you can come in thirty seconds, then you can do porn.’ ”

James Deen has believably stated that he’s never failed an STD test and believably defended Canyons costar and subject of a recent Times screed Lindsay Lohan. He believably enjoys sex with women that he’s being paid to penetrate. He believably expressed vulnerability in GQ’s profile of him, admitting that “personal private sex is almost too intimate now.”

Last year, Deen told Interview that the “paparazzi can’t get a picture of me doing anything interesting. I’m untouchable. Here’s James Deen peeing in public, making out with a girl in a bar, drunk and puking. Yeah, I’m a porn star. What do you expect?” He was a little too specific, however. It’s not just paparazzi paydays he’s immune to: It’s negative popular opinion. Anything obnoxious he does is written off by his career, and anything likable is magnified by the surprise of its messenger, like when Judd Apatow’s younger daughter says something funny in This Is 40.

James Deen is the anti-Anne Hathaway, battered by upskirt-seeking photographers and the ire of a public offended by her beauty and desperate earnestness. James Deen is untouchable.
