Washington [www.tri-cityherald.com]- An expert on striptease, pole dancing and sexuality is taking it all off today at Washington State University Tri-Cities.
But instead of peeling away clothing, Miyoko Fujimori will expose body image, self-esteem and relationship issues during “The College Striptease.”
“It sounds different than what it actually is,” said Sheila Newsom, of the school’s Equality, Vision and Empowerment (EVE) Club, which organized the event with the Psychology Club. “This is going to be a positive event on campus.”
California-based Fujimori is an award-winning author on sexuality — her book, The Housewife’s Guide to the Practical Striptease, was published in 2006. She also is the owner of a romance home-party company and the host of Shop Erotic TV, a home shopping-style show.
But the former Playboy TV talk show host will put away the bumping, grinding, pole dancing and sex toys at today’s lecture — at least, that’s what organizers think — and talk about issues affecting today’s young adults.
“Their self-image is obviously an important aspect in their lives at this time,” said psychology club president Nick Zaharevich.
As part of the school’s Women’s Health Awareness Month, Fujimori will use her own experiences to discuss safe sex, depression, stress management, positive body image and better communication in relationships.
“When you think about women’s health, it goes into things like depression and body image,” Newsom said. “She is sending a positive message.”
But organizers don’t expect simply a tame lecture.
“I’m sure that she will say things that will shock people,” Newsom said. “We think about striptease and we think that it’s a bad thing. We don’t think of it as something empowering.”
