MUNCIE, Indiana -- A longtime outlet for adult toys, fashions and DVDs is closing today.
The Pleasures store at 3410 N. Wheeling Avenue will close, owner Rod Terry said.
"We'll be open until midnight, and that will be it," Terry said. "With the economy being what it is, sales have been slow."
Terry closed another local Pleasures location, on Godman Avenue, in May 2008.
"We're a luxury item, not a requirement," Terry said Friday, as he did last year. "From what we've heard the entire industry is down. Distributors and vendors say it's across the board."
Terry and his wife operated Pleasures stores in Muncie for 12 years. The Wheeling Avenue location opened five years ago.
Pleasures' closing leaves much of the local adult novelty and lingerie business to Cirilla's -- formerly Priscilla's -- on McGalliard Road and After Dark on West Kilgore Avenue.
Both stores are local outlets of chains. Cirilla's alone has 15 stores in Indiana and 58 nationwide.
Terry said 65 percent of his customers were women.
"The good thing about the store was that people were there because they wanted to be," he said. "They weren't here to pick up deodorant."
Terry said he and his wife have second careers in the health-care industry.
"That's guaranteed employment there," he said.
"We appreciate the 12 years we had here in Muncie," Terry said.
