from www.baywindows.com - From Here to Eternity, James Jones’ 1951 novel chronicling pre-Pearl Harbor life on a Hawaii army base, has been restored and reissued -- with previously censored passages depicting homosexuality in the military intact.
Kaylie Jones, the author’s daughter, told the Daily Beast in 2009 that her father’s book originally included dialogue about sex acts among the military men, and more profanity than was first published. (View part of the original manuscript here.) According to Jones, her father, who passed away in 1977, "believed...that homosexuality was a natural condition of men in close quarters, and that it in no way affected a soldier’s capabilities on the battlefield."
The book was adapted into an award-winning 1953 film starring Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster [picture from www.VillageVoice,com], and Deborah Kerr. It was announced last month that the novel shall also be adapted into a stage musical, slated to open in 2012.
A digital version of Jones’ tome is available for purchase online here.
