I have always said that no one will fight for your rights like a pornographer. In actuality, pornographers are the canaries of the first amendment coal mines. Like it or not, the rights and freedoms mainstream producers have were won in court by men like Reuben Sturman, Larry Flynt, Russ Hampshire, Steve Toushin, Phil Harvey, and yes…Rob Black.

Girls come into the business these days and don’t have any respect for the people who sat in a prison cell so they could spread their legs on camera and make a living.

Knowing the history of the business you expect to make your living in is essential.

Not knowing who Sturman or the other pioneers of free speech are is like becoming a football player and not knowing who Joe Montana is, or becoming a baseball player and not knowing who Jackie Robinson is.

It’s a damn shame that today those first amendment heroes are forgotten. Once a year a select few are given an award on stage, presented by some starlet who has no idea who the recipient is and often butchers his name on stage.

I would bet my left nut (which happens to be my favorite nut) that 90% of the performers who went and saw David Bertolino’s Deep Throat Play had no idea that Harry Reems was the first actor tried and convicted for obscenity and that mainstream actors like Jack Nicholson rallied around him in defense of free speech.

If the names Flynt, Sturman, Toushin, Harvey, Hampshire, Isaacs, Little, Norton, Stagliano, Zicari and Goldstein don’t mean anything to you…I suggest you go work in another industry because ignoring those leaders is not just a slap in the face to the people who worked hard for you to voice your opinions, but a social and cultural travesty.
