from www.seattletimes.nwsource.com – A Kentlake High School math teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student last month was charged Tuesday with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.
Barbara Jeanne Anderson, 37, was arrested last week and later released from King County Jail. She has been suspended from her job and placed on paid leave while the King County Sheriff’s Office investigates the allegations, according to the Kent School District.
Investigators started looking into the case after the teen told his uncle that he had sex with a teacher, according to a probable-cause affidavit filed in King County Superior Court. According to a report by sheriff’s Detective Christine Elias, the two had sex once.
The teen first met Anderson after transferring into her class during his sophomore year. The teen turned to Anderson for extra help in math and to talk about personal problems, including his depression, the affidavit said.
At some point, Anderson gave him her personal cellphone number so they could talk, probable-cause paperwork said.
The two became friends over a social-networking site and exchanged private messages, including one in which the teen told Anderson she was “beautiful,” and another from Anderson in which she told the teen she was “attracted to him,” probable-cause paperwork said.
The teen’s mother told sheriff’s investigators that her son and Anderson had exchanged almost 800 text messages from Jan. 25 to Feb. 21.
The two met up one night and Anderson performed sex acts with the teen while they were inside his car. She later sent him a text message asking when they would meet up again, probable-cause paperwork said.
While the age of consent in Washington state is 16, it is against the law for a teacher or anyone else in a position of power to have sexual relations with anyone younger than 18.
When the teen was suspended from school on Feb. 4 for fighting, a “teary-eyed” Anderson pleaded with an administrator to allow him to return to school, court paperwork said. Anderson told administrators that she had received text messages from him indicating that he was having personal problems, probable-cause documents said.
Anderson attended a meeting with the teen’s parents four days later and explained that the teen had texted her about his problems. The teen’s parents threatened to take away his text-messaging abilities, probable-cause paperwork said.
The teen’s mother, who told investigators that she was suspicious about the teacher’s relationship with her son, then logged into their family cellphone account and noted the large number of text messages between the teacher and her son, Elias’ report said.
On Feb. 21, the mother told Anderson to stop contacting her son, probable-cause paperwork said. She contacted Kentlake High School when she learned the teen had told his uncle he had sex with a teacher, the paperwork said.
Chris Loftis, communications director for the Kent School District, said Anderson will remain on paid leave while the case progresses through the court system. He said a decision on her job status will likely not be made until the case is resolved.
Anderson, a married mother of two, faces up to 12 months in jail if she’s convicted, according to King County prosecutors.
