Utah- Spencer’s Gifts at Layton Hills Mall is changing its displays after some customers complained about the adult content and police took merchandise from the store.
Nearly 10 months ago, Layton officers obtained a search warrant and took a load of novelties from Spencer’s. That came in the wake of reports from customers saying the store’s displays flew in the face of community standards.
Spencer’s has operated stores in Utah for 40 years and sells basic items, such as clothing and accessories.
The rub for some customers: it also deals adult novelties, including sex-related candies, games and toys that purportedly have been in plain view.
Law enforcement officials alleged Spencer’s was violating state laws by selling materials harmful to minors and putting up indecent public displays; they threatened prosecution if Spencer’s did not change its store.
Following extensive talks and threats of prosecution, Davis County officials now say Spencer’s is willing to comply with laws and local community standards.
“I’m sure the police department there in Layton and our office will ensure they’re doing what needs to be done,” said Chief Deputy Davis County Attorney Bill McGuire.
Spencer’s managers were not immediately available for comment Wednesday regarding how they plan to change store displays at the Layton Hills Mall location.
Prosecutors said in a news release that “Spencer’s Gifts desires to remain a solid and legitimate

business partner in our community, and the parties will proceed on that understanding.”
