But the 9 to 5 routine bored her. So she began posing in bondage shoots. Then she posed in nude bondage photography. Soon after, Ela was starring in lesbian and BSDM videos and hosting own website (www.darlingela.com), which she calls “pretty porn for smart people.”
“I decided that if you put the nude and bondage together, you basically had porn,” Ela tells us. “So, I decided to give it a shot—and I really, really liked it.” The skinny 5’8” B-cup library nerd had become a porn star.
These days, your pornographic performer isn’t always a hot blonde in a cheerleader outfit. Instead, she may resemble the actual girl next door. The most popular videos on YouPorn fall into the amateur category, and — whether it’s filled with actual amateurs or not—there you’ll find small breasts, stretch marks, acne, lanky bodies, big noses and other all-natural qualities.
“There’s always been a market for the girl next door, everybody’s natural, but it’s really popular now,” veteran porn star Jesse Jane, now in her 11th year doing films, told Metro World News.
She says the Internet has led to the rise in “amateur” acts. Many more people can enter the industry by posting on the Web instead of having to vie for the few contracts with an adult entertainment company. “Before, you would know who the top porn girls were,” Jesse says. “Now, you wouldn’t be able to name a handful of the girls who are in the industry. Before, they made the focus on a star and built the companies around a girl, making that girl the fantasy.”
Jesse may be one of the last of the contract girls. Blonde and bubbly with large fake breasts, she’s exactly what you picture when you hear the words “porn star.” She has noticed that recent girls she’s worked with have been selected to look like “someone you would see in Starbucks.”
Ela believes the reason why we’re seeing so many regular-looking people is because of a movement to embrace who we are. For Ela — the girl-next-door with a fairy-like quality — that means sometimes she’s dressed up as a zombie. Sometimes she’s peddling sweaty, smelly shoes to foot fetishists. Sometimes she’s starring in BDSM videos, experimenting with machines and trying out being hog-tied and tortured.
“What I didn’t even realize shooting porn is how much I began to evolve in my comfort with sex and with my own body,” she says. (The same could be said for the viewer, who can explore their basest fantasies in their living rooms.) Given that all-inclusive feeling she, for one, ay dislike our photo above, pitting two women against one another. “There’s lots of different ‘persons’ (in porn), but I don’t think one is more acceptable than the other. People pursue porn in a way that’s comfortable to them.”
Jane, for one, isn’t worried about a face off either.
“The blonde girl for some reason, I don’t think that market will ever go away with the porn girls with big fake boobs,” she says between a giggle. “I think that will always be there.”
