HOUSTON - Jurors twice told a judge they are deadlocked in their deliberations of a former high school teacher accused of having sex with a student on campus.

Shannon Kay Hrozek, 43, was charged with sexual abuse of a child.

Prosecutors said an assistant principal of Westfield High School caught the English teacher performing a sex act on a 16-year-old male student on Jan. 3, 2008 in the teachers' lounge.

In closing arguments, prosecutors said the evidence against Hrozek leaves no doubt of her guilt.

Hrozek's defense attorney said there was no sexual contact. She said Hrozek showed bad judgment by meeting the boy at school after hours, but said the student made up the allegations because he had a grudge.

"You may not like her. You don't have to like her. But you have to believe every reasonable element has been proved beyond a reasonable doubt," defense attorney Katherine Scardino told jurors.

The jury began deliberations at about 1:15 p.m. The judge told the panel to come back on Tuesday at 10 a.m. to continue deliberations.

If found guilty, Hrozek could face up to 20 years in prison.

Hrozek began working at the school in August 2004. She resigned after her arrest.
