Most people probably missed this story, but in today’s LA Times it was reported that Dr. Jonathan Fielding just donated $50 Million smackeroos to the UCLA School of Public Health.
If Fielding’s name is at all familiar, he’s Director of Public Health for LA County, and the guy often quoted any time the condom issue concerning the adult industry rears its ugly head. Fielding, according to the story hauls in a very tidy $317,000 a year. But even with that kind of paycheck, you’d have to do a lot of scrimping, coupon cutting and cashing in of soda bottles to come up with $50M.
The money apparently comes from Fielding’s stock in a Texas-based private investment firm, Dimensional Fund Advisors, which manages assets worldwide. The school, according to the story, will receive the income from the stock and all profit from it if it’s sold.
Fielding, 69, said he and his wife were very “fortunate” in their investment and made the decision to share that with the university, where he has been a faculty member for more than 30 years.
I don’t think fortunate is the word to describe a bonanza like that. And you got to figure if Fielding’s comfortable parting with that much loot there’s got to be a lot more stashed away.
The condom business is pretty lucrative.
