Liddy was convicted of conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wiretapping for his involvement in the Watergate scandal during the Nixon administration. He organized and directed the burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate building in May and June 1972, working alongside E. Howard Hunt. Five of Liddy's operatives were arrested inside the DNC offices on June 17, 1972. Subsequent investigations into the Watergate scandal led to President Nixon's resignation in 1974.

Liddy was convicted of burglary, conspiracy, and refusing to testify to the Senate committee investigating Watergate. He served nearly 52 months in federal prisons. His 20-year imprisonment sentence was commuted to 8 years by President Jimmy Carter. Liddy was a Republican and served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. He received his education from Fordham University, earning a BA and an LLB.

Liddy was married to Frances Purcell on November 9, 1957, in Saint Mary’s Church at 231 Church. Frances Purcell, a Poughkeepsie native, died in 2010. They had five children, including Tom, Alexandra, Jim, Grace, and Ray. The family attended the Dutchess County Fair every year, as remembered by Thomas Liddy, one of his sons. Liddy was born to Sylvester Liddy and Maria Abbaticchio in Brooklyn, New York.

After his time in prison, Liddy became a radio talk show host, a role he held from 1992 until his retirement on July 27, 2012.
