LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 – What to wear, what to wear on election night? “Stripper shoes” with five-inch heels, or simple stilettos? A tiny denim miniskirt, or liquid latex?
“I want to look slutty,” said Mary Carey, the pornography actress and one of the 135 candidates for governor, who was having her makeup done in the bathroom of her North Hollywood condominium on Tuesday afternoon while her miniature mutt, Miss Fox-E, was licking the collection of boas hanging in the living room. “I never look slutty anymore.
There was also the concession speech to worry about, which she planned to make at 8:45 p.m., at the Game Show Network.
“I’ll come up with something,” she said. “But what if I win, and I don’t find out until later?”
Mary Carey, 23, whose real name is Mary Ellen Cook, received more publicity than most of the unknown candidates in the race, but she was not fooling herself about her chances.
“I’d like to win,” she said, during the 90-minute makeup session, while her makeup artist was attaching long and lush false lashes to her eyelids. “Hopefully Howard Stern got me some votes.”
Mr. Stern was only one of the hordes of broadcasters and reporters who swarmed to Mary Carey during the two-month campaign. There were so many reporters trailing her as she went to vote at a church in North Hollywood that it took her an hour to get through with interviews before casting her ballot. “It was so funny,” she said. “I’ve never voted before.”
“I can’t believe I was, like, on the ballot for a governor’s race,” she said, adding that she had voted against the recall, then for herself. Her platform included a proposal to tax breast implants, and some other more serious ideas, too. She said she would miss being a candidate.
“I don’t think I could ever top running for governor,” she said. “I’m not in the porn industry for the sex,” she added. “I love being on camera. And running for governor, I got to be on camera with my clothes on.”
Her face was almost ready and, as for the outfit, she picked the denim miniskirt, a plunging polyester black shirt and stilettos.
