Nearly two dozen angry NHL players slammed a California developer with a lawsuit Thursday, charging he blew $25 million they’d invested in a Mexican golf resort on porn stars, private jets and parties.
The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims Kenneth Jowdy [pictured left] spared no expense entertaining his baseball pals – including Roger Clemens, Reggie Jackson, Joe Morgan and Pete Rose – with the NHL players’ money.
Among the ripped-off hockey stars were former Rangers Bryan Berard and Mattias Norstrom, and ex-Islander Michael Peca. Each player claims to have lost $600,000 to $700,000 to Jowdy’s shenanigans.
Jowdy scoffed at the suit, calling it a farce.
“There’s not one statement of fact in the [lawsuit],” Jowdy told the Daily News on Thursday night, adding he intends to countersue for libel.
“All I have to do is tell the truth,” he said. “I have nothing to hide.”
In addition to money they lost, the players are asking for $15 million in damages.
The suit claims Jowdy duped the players into investing in a beachfront golf resort his company Diamante and Legacy Properties planned to build in Cabo San Lucas.
The players contend that instead of developing the luxury links, Jowdy spent their money entertaining his baseball friends.
“Jowdy was solely responsible for inviting these individuals and was also responsible for arranging for various porn stars, escorts, strippers, party girls and other women to attend these functions,” the suit charges.
The players said they learned they’d been hoodwinked when Jowdy gave an under-oath deposition in a lawsuit against Phillip Kenner, an unlicensed Arizona financial adviser accused of scamming other NHL players out of millions.
Jowdy said the Cabo golf course is on target to be completed in the fall, and he showed The News photos of several completed greens.
“We’re building one of the nicest golf courses in the world,” Jowdy said.
