from www.kansascity.com - A federal judge on Monday sentenced a once-prominent lawyer to 10 years in prison for using the Internet to entice a minor for sex.

Authorities in Kansas charged Samuel P. Logan, 46, of Kansas City, in July 2010 with sending pornography to an undercover officer posing online as a 14-year-old girl and then urging her to meet him at Oak Park Mall.

District court judges in Kansas recused themselves from the case because Logan’s father, James K. Logan, is a former federal appellate judge who was dean of the University of Kansas School of Law from 1961 to 1968.

Chief U.S. District Judge Fernando Gaitan of Missouri heard the case.

In June and July 2010, Logan sent images of adult and child pornography to undercover officers, telling him his name was “Sam,” he was a lawyer and he worked on the fourth floor of an Overland Park building.

Logan was a partner at Foulston Siefkin, the largest law firm based in Kansas.

Believing that he was meeting the girl at the mall, Logan brought sex toys and pornography in his car. Investigators arrested him after he approached a 14-year-old who looked like the girl with whom he thought he was corresponding.

Logan’s lawyer, J.R. Hobbs, said after the hearing:

“Mr. Logan accepts full responsibility for his conduct and indicated that to the court.”

from www.abajournal.com - A onetime litigation partner at the biggest firm in Kansas has been sentenced to 10 years in a federal prison.

Samuel P. Logan, 46, was sentenced today for using the Internet to entice a child for sex, reports the Kansas City Star.

Logan was allegedly chatting online last year, however, not with a 14-year-old, as he thought, but with an undercover officer. After he arrived at a mall with sex toys and porn in his car to meet the fictitious teen, he was arrested.

In addition to his prominence as a partner at Foulston Siefkin, Logan also was well-known because his father is a former federal appellate judge in Kansas and ex-dean of the University of Kansas School of Law. Consequently, federal judges in Kansas recused themselves and his case was heard by Chief U.S. District Judge Fernando Gaitan of Missouri, the newspaper reports.

“Mr. Logan accepts full responsibility for his conduct and indicated that to the court,” his lawyer, J.R. Hobbs, said after today's hearing, explaining to the newspaper that his client is remorseful and wants to get treatment while he is serving his sentence. “He will work to become productive again," Hobbs said.

Logan was disbarred by consent both by a Kansas Supreme Court order (PDF) last year and by a Missouri Supreme Court order last month.
