New York-Paris Hilton was definitely not ready for her closeup yesterday.

The 23-year-old hotel heiress was uncharacteristically elusive and dour-faced at a charity polo match in posh Bridgehampton yesterday, a day after photos surfaced showing her bruised and battered.

In a choreographed public appearance, there was scant evidence yesterday of the fat lip and black-and-blue marks on her arm that she sported earlier in the week.

The willowy star of the TV show “The Simple Life” was suddenly camera shy, hiding in a luxury sport-utility vehicle with tinted windows for most of the event, except for a brief excursion in a Mercedes convertible.

She wore oversized shades and a relatively demure pink dress, and was tailed by bodyguards.

“She’s fine. She’s absolutely fine,” said family spokeswoman Catherine Saxton.

Asked if there was any merit to reports that Hilton had told pals that her ex-boyfriend, Nick Carter, roughed her up, Saxton said only: “There will be no comment.”

But a family friend said Hilton’s parents, Rick and Kathy, are mulling their legal options.

“They’re weighing whether to press charges,” the source said. “They know that a trial could bring up a lot of subjects they’d rather avoid.”

Carter’s lawyer, Marty Singer, has vehemently denied that his client, a former member of the Backstreet Boys, was responsible for the bruises.
