Montreal, Canada- A new adult video store that wants to sell peep shows for a quarter has angered a group of Greenfield Park residents and business owners who say the porn shop will drag down their neighbourhood.
The store, called Sexxxodium, is scheduled to open in March on Churchill Boulevard in the South Shore borough, to the dismay of some residents who are pressuring municipal officials to stop the business.
About a dozen residents and business owners have banded together to lobby the Greenfield Park council to prevent Sexxxodium from opening.
But according to Greenfield Park Mayor Bernard Constantini, the borough has little power to stop the store, even if council approved a rezoning bylaw that would prevent future sex shops from setting up in residential neighbourhoods.
“By changing the bylaw we can’t stop [the store] from opening,” he said this week. “Because [they] have the right to open, because [they] have a permit.”
But some business owners worry the sex shop will tarnish the area’s reputation, which they say has already taken a hit because of a nearby massage parlour.
“It’s too close to home,” said Jason Matuzewiski, who runs a commercial coffee equipment business with headquarters sandwiched between the massage parlour and the Sexxxodium.
“Definitely, I will have to search for a new location.”
Other residents are concerned the shop’s presence will negatively impact children in the neighbourhood.
“There are three or four schools here; we have a library, churches, a French international school; we’ve got a daycare centre — we’ve got a lot of kids,” said Mick O’Gready. “All school bus stops are visible from this place [the sex shop].”
According to the store’s website, Sexxxodium will offer x-rated rental videos and an in-house private peep show booth for 25 cents a minute.
The store’s owner was not available for comment.
