Perth, Australia- from www.smh.com.au – Perth’s first public porn screening has been canned.

The Rooftop Movies have stripped Deep Throat from their summer line-up, 40 years after it was originally screened in New York cinemas, after receiving four complaints.

“When we programmed Deep Throat we received some concerned commentary from a few audience members about the gender politics of the film.”

A Rooftop Movies spokesperson said: “We like to think that the relationship with our audience is an open dialogue, and when we programmed Deep Throat we received some concerned commentary from a few audience members about the gender politics of the film. These were not mindless rants, they were well considered critiques.

Deep Throat made an instant celebrity out of its star Linda Lovelace.

“In light of this, we reviewed the screening of the film, took on board the feedback from our audience, and decided the concerns were valid enough to cancel the screening. Only eight tickets had sold at that time anyway.”

Deep Throat made Linda Lovelace porn royalty, but later in life she claimed that anyone who watched the film was watching her being raped because her husband/manager Chuck Traynor had forced her, at gunpoint, to take part.

When originally explaining its inclusion, program coordinator Jess Darlow said the decision to show Deep Throat was “nerve-wracking”, but believed people would be interested to see the cult film before a new movie about its star, Linda Lovelace, hit cinemas next year.

“It’s a bit of audience education,” she said at the time.

“There are a lot of new facts that have come to light about her life and it’s a good time to see the original.

“We’re looking at it as a cultural education rather than adult cinema.”

Deep Throat was due to be screened on December 8, but has since been replaced with a double screening of The Goonies and Monkey Magic.
