LOUISVILLE, Ky. – St. Matthews police said they arrested a burglary suspect with a penchant for pornographic movies and a death wish.
Now, Louisville police believe that man could be responsible for dozens of break ins over the span of more than a year.
Police call him the “Purse Burglar.” Ricky Patterson, 20, was arrested Wednesday afternoon near his apartment off Goose Creek Road. He now faces 67 charges, including 61 burglary charges, four auto theft charges and two charges for criminal mischief.
“In 26 years of law enforcement, as a detective, I have never really sat down and interviewed someone who’s gone into a home in the middle of the night and stayed there while people are sleeping while they know they’re in the house,” said Det. Brad Jeffrey.
Jeffrey said Patterson told them he’d had a rough life and was hoping someone would shoot him.
“He wanted a confrontation,” said Jeffrey.
Kyle Hardin said he and his wife were sleeping last Tuesday morning when they received a call at 4:30 a.m. from Yellow Cab “asking if we had ordered a cab,” he said. “My wife said ‘no.’ They called back a few seconds later and said that somebody at this address is calling to say they need a cab.”
Hardin said when his wife looked out the window of their Willis Ave. home, she saw their Saturn parked in the middle of the street surrounded by police cars. He said when officers entered his home, they found lights and the TV on in their sun room. Investigators believe Patterson spent nearly 90 minutes in the house, ordering four pay-per-view adult movies before calling for a cab and attempting to steal the Hardin’s car.
“It’s sad,” said Hardin. “It really is sad. You want to be angry at the same time you want to be sad for the guy.”
