Saugus, California- A man allegedly went on a shooting rampage through Saugus, killing an adult gift store clerk and wounding two others before he turned the gun on himself, deputies said Sunday. Store security tapes show the man returning to the shop 20 minutes after he first shot the clerk and fired another rifle round into 24-year-old clerk Christopher Simons’s face, said sheriff’s Sgt. Deborah Miller. Simons died on the scene and the suspected shooter, 25-year-old Robert Wheeler was hospitalized on Sunday in critical condition while two of the gunshot victims were in good condition. Wheeler called 911 from a pay phone Saturday night and admitted to murdering the Santa Clarita Gifts clerk. As deputies arrived, Wheeler shot himself in the head. The alleged spree began at 7:40 p.m., when Wheeler walked into the store in the 25800 block of San Fernando Road and reportedly shot Simons in the chest with a .22 caliber rifle while other stores in the shopping center were closed. He allegedly stole unreleased items and left. The Canyon Country man reportedly returned 20 minutes later and shot the incapacitated clerk in the face. Coroner’s officials said they were not sure when Simons died. Minutes after the shooter left the store, a man digging through dumpsters was shot in the back with the same caliber rifle near the intersection of Haskell Canyon and Bouquet Canyon roads. The second victim didn’t see the shooter and thought he had been shot with a pellet gun. He drove to a nearby fire station for examination and refused an ambulance ride, instead driving himself to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. Shortly after the second shooting, Wheeler reportedly broke into a Saugus home but a man inside chased him out. The resident followed Wheeler outside to get his license plate and the shooter got out of his van and fired at the man, hitting him in the chest. At about 9:30 p.m., Wheeler called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station from a pay phone in a Stevenson Ranch restaurant parking lot. Wheeler told deputies he had killed a store clerk and shot another man, a sheriff’s report stated. The desk deputy kept him on the phone while sheriff’s headed to the Taco Bell on Pico Canyon Road. As the deputies arrived, Wheeler dropped the phone, ran to his van and shot himself in the head with his rifle. Emergency workers rushed Wheeler to Newhall Memorial hospital. Sheriff’s homicide Lt. Jack Jordan said possible motives are under investigation and Wheeler had not yet been officially charged with any crime on Sunday night. Whether drugs or alcohol were involved was not known.
