I had the following chat with Katie Morgan back in November 2001, just as she got out of jail. Morgan was arrested for her part in smuggling nearly 100 pounds of marijuana across the San Diego border in a car truck, as she was coming back from Mexico:

Katie just finished spending four months as guest of the federal government for her part in a smuggling stint that got her nailed at San Diego customs. I asked Morgan if she thought she was set up.

“Honestly? Yeah,” she says. “Or maybe not. It could have been a lot of really bad coincidences. On purpose ones. They told me to pull over. And they brought out the dogs and I went oh hell!”

“The stuff was in the car hidden?”

“Yeah,” says Morgan.

“98 pounds is pretty hard to hide.”

“It was a pretty big car,” she states.

According to Morgan she was detained and pled the fifth.

“I did not say anything so they put me in jail,” she continues. “For a week then I bailed out. They take you and put you in a little room and leave you there for ten hours. You don’t say anything so there’s nothing else they can do with you. So they put you in jail. You go to court, get bail, go home then they put you back in jail. I spent four months.”

“You’re not the first woman in this business who’s seen the inside of a jail cell. I’ve been told conditions are deplorable. Was the food okay?”

“No, it was nasty, crap, horrible,” Morgan said, noting that she basically starved herself and worked herself to death.

“It wasn’t a jail-jail but a halfway house with 150 people in it,” Morgan continued. “They made me work first at the border patrol then at the naval base for 50 cents an hour. It was hard work.”

The women were sequestered from the men- guys downstairs, women upstairs. Morgan described it as a coed halfway house.

“Was there hank panky going on?” I asked her.

“Everywhere. It was a mess,” replies Morgan.

“Did you get hit on a lot?”

“Just a little bit,” she laughs.

“Were there a lot of nude shower scenes going on?”

“The nude shower scenes would have been so much cooler if the women weren’t so ugly and fat,” answers Morgan. “But there were a couple of people. I made some friends. To hang out with. Not go out with. I like friends.”

“Give me a scenario. Did you have to go somewhere private?”

“A lot of people did it on the air conditioner,” she recalled. “But I never did that because it was too nasty. There’s a wall here and a wall there and a camera here. And you can see straight down this way but there’s an air conditioner in the corner. It was the only blind spot.

“What spots did you find?” she was asked.

“You have to find a place,” said Morgan. “You check in and check out. When you’re out you can only go to work and go shopping. But I had two jobs where I worked 80 hours a week and had to take public transportation. So I knew people with cars where I could go places. It was like getting around mommy’s rules and making out.”

“Were you getting laid with frequency?”

“Yeah, I’m not real patient,” she responds.

“Once a week, twice a week?”

“It depends,” answers Morgan. “I think the longest I went was about two or three weeks in between. It was with a guy.”

“How does somebody do the come on in a halfway house?”

“It’s weird,” says Morgan. “Because everybody knew everybody. You’re living with them.”

“I imagine the gossip thing had everybody knowing your business. Did they know you were a porn star?”

“Yeah,” she says. “It started out as a dirty little rumor. I don’t know where it actually came from. Finally I was like, yeah. [She shows two thumbs up.] It caused a little bit of annoyance, actually.”
