He denies all the charges against him and has said he feels he is being persecuted like Jesus.
The 69-year-old is one of the most colourful characters to wear the drab brown habit of the Franciscan friar.
The priest, known as Padre Fidele, has built his reputation on his work in Africa and with people on the margins of Italian society: prisoners, prostitutes and immigrants.
With his white beard and easy smile, he is a household name across much of Italy.
He has hit the headlines before, for his conversion of one of Italy's best-known porn stars.
He is also known for his avid support of football, called "il frate ultra" because he is one of the leaders of his local football team's diehard fans.
In the past, Padre Fidele has campaigned against violence in football stadiums and against drunk-driving.
The charges he now faces are shocking. A 40-year-old nun alleges that she was repeatedly raped by the priest and others at his sanctuary in Calabria, on the toe of the Italian peninsula.
