Rob Rotten Amply on the Mend; “I’m Not Planning on Crashing Again!”- final

San Francisco- To hear the extent of it, you’d have thunk Rob Rotten had been in a train wreck. www.adultfyi.com/read.php?ID=23374.

Instead, Rob makes it sound more like a train ride with time for sight seeing. A couple weeks ago, Rotten had suffered a motorcycle crash, was air lifted to the hospital and was discovered to have had a cervical spine fracture in C2, a pelvic fracture, a torn ACL in his right knee, and a concussion. Rob was released from the hospital later that day. That was the part I found hard to believe and so I asked him about that.

“It was a pretty good little tumble I took,” he laughs. “I got really lucky. The C2 fracture is a stress-related fracture. It’s common to a football injury. It’s caused by the C1 and C2 compressing together. Instead of blowing out a disc, it cracks the vertebrae. They said it’s actually better than blowing a disc. They said I got pretty lucky on that.”

“And you had a broken pelvis?”

“The pelvis was a stress fracture,” he replies. “There’s nothing they can do about it. They don’t put you in cast. They just say be careful. Things might hurt, but there’s nothing you can do.”

Asked if he was in a lot of pain, Rotten claims it isn’t too bad.

“You’ve got the normal pain killers and stuff like that!” he laughs. “And I’m starting physical therapy.”

Rotten explains that he was practicing for a race [which he is missing this weekend] when the accident happened.

“It was at a race track up in Willis, California,” he explains. “We were just trying out a new master cylinder for the front braking system. Prior to the crash, I was in turn 5 at Thunder Hill and I noticed a bit of brake fade so I was off to the pit. So I was cruising through the rest of it, not at 100% because I was a little bit concerned about the brake fade. I came into Turn 8 and I did a litle brake check, which I normally don’t do, just to make sure that my brakes were still there because Turn 9, you eat ’em.

“And they were there, so I charged up the hill, put on the brakes and there was nothing. I attempted to make the turn nevertheless and it didn’t quite work out. I low sided and went off the track and continued on for a pretty good tumble.”

According to Rotten, he didn’t get up right away – as if you’d expect that he would.

“It actually took me awhile to realize what happened,” he continues. “There’s not much difference between 120 mph and 140 mph, but what’s going to happen, you’re going to tumble and tumble a long way. Imagine if you’re in a spinning chair, you don’t know where you are. Try doing that for a couple of minutes. You get pretty disoriented. I didn’t have much sense of time or where I was. Then due to the nature of the injury, they air lifted me to the nearest hospital by a helicopter.”

“Once I got there, they did a bunch of x-rays,and that’s when the doctor came back and said I had a cervical spine fracture in C2. I felt okay. It’s not like the first time – I’ve had pretty good crashes. And the way I saw it was, hey, I didn’t break an arm; I didn’t break a leg. I don’t have any broken ribs. It was let me out of here- I’m not planning on staying too long. So they let me out and I went home. And I’ve been dealing with the recovery parts of it and doing physical therapy. But I should be back and ready to go, close to 100% pretty soon.”

“With a stress fracture isn’t there a chance it can aggravate and get worse?”

“Yeah, but I’m not planning on crashing again,” says Rotten. “We’ll see what happens. It’s obviously something I’m going to be thinking about in the next race or the next time I’m on the track. But it’s also the nature of the beast.

“The last couple of months have been rough on my body,” he continues. “I’ve had four crashes the last two months on the race track. And only one of them was my fault. I got clipped by a rider in one race; and I got clipped by another rider in a practice. It’s been a kind of a rocky last couple of months.”

“Do you think this might be nature’s way of trying to tell you something?” he’s asked.

“I don’t know,” Rotten laughs. “It’s an interesting way of looking at it.”

“And another thing I thought when I heard pelvis was how was your sexual enthusiasm right now?”

“I’m just concentrating on getting better for the next race,” states Rotten. “That’s the biggest thing. I’m fortunate that I don’t rely on my income from performing and I don’t shoot that many movies. So it’s not like my main source of income, either. I’m pretty lucky with that- otherwise I’d be reconsidering what I was doing.”

“The way it sounded was like an Evel Knievel spill and you wiped out.”

“The race track is generally a controlled environment,” says Rotten.

“There’s adequate slide outs and protection if you do crash and you will, eventually. What happened is that I low-sided, which is the best way to crash on a motorcycle. You’re leaned over so much the bike kind of lays over on its side. It’s not like a dramatic high side where you get flown off the top. The problem with a low side is that sometimes you get your ankle caught underneath the bike which is what happened here. The bike takes you for a ride, also- you’re not able to separate. So when the bike hits the dirt, then it flips, and you get flipped off of it.

“That’s when I did a face plant and compacted my C1 and C2. The rest I don’t know. I think I tore my ACL tumbling; and the pelvis probably had something to do with the impact and flipping around. But it’s part of the fun and games.”

“Proof once again that no one talks better about their injuries than the one who sustains them.”

“Actually it was my web guy who sent that [posting] out,” says Rotten. “It wasn’t something that I really wanted out there. I got all these phone calls, like, oh my God, you’re in the hospital? My web guy was, I thought people should know. I’m, like, okay, we’ll see.”
