Washington – from www.mynorthwest.com – You might squirm a bit when hearing the words ‘pornography’ and ‘church’ in the same sentence and that’s exactly why a local pastor is hosting a weekend long discussion about porn.
Porn star Ron Jeremy will represent his industry in a debate with a pastor at the Eastlake Community Church in Bothell.
“I do believe that if we’re going to talk about something like pornography and really try to engage the culture and the community in a dialogue, I don’t think it’s fair to hear one side of the issue,” the church’s pastor, Ryan Meeks, told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson Show on Wednesday.
“Ron will have just as much opportunity as Craig (the debating pastor) to talk about his side,” Meeks said.
The debate Saturday night is part of a weekend full of discussion at the church. Friday night is Lady’s night: Porn and Pastries. Saturday is aimed at men with Porn in the Morn and on Sunday, Pastor Meeks will interview Craig and Ron in his normal Sunday services.
Meeks said he thinks the issue is important to talk about because for people who are addicted to pornography or for someone who is close to a porn addict, there are very little resources for help.
“Pornography is mainstream. It’s not something that no one talks about. There are thousands and thousands of people viewing porn in Seattle right this very minute,” he said.
While viewing pornography may be mainstream and not be perceived as a problem, Meeks said his biggest concern is that there are “116,000 searches for child pornography every day.”
He said the average age for the first time a child sees internet porn is 11.
The Porn Debate is expected to be packed, but Meeks said it’s free to students and members of the military, a section of the population he said could really use the help.
“A lot of my friends who go into the military come back addicted to pornography. They’re stuck out there with a bunch of dudes for months on end,” he said.
