Senate Finance Committee adds 20% porn surcharge to budget

COLUMBIA, S.C. –Senators working on the state budget have added a 20 percent tax to pornographic magazines.

Senator Mike Fair [pictured] proposed the tax earlier this week to generate money to help the state Parole and Probation Department track sex offenders.

There was little discussion about the budget proposal Wednesday in the Finance Committee other than efforts to kill it because it may not square with Senate rules against changing laws through the budget.

But the proposal was approved without a recorded vote and lawmakers expect the objection to be raised again on the Senate floor.
