OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — The groom promised not to drink during his bachelor party, but he still came home about four hours later sober, bloody and bruised. Brian Schroeder said he winced his way through his $30,000 wedding two days after strip club bouncers attacked him without provocation, leaving him with a knot on his forehead, a black eye, scraped arms and neck injuries.

Now Schroeder and his wife, Amanda, have filed a lawsuit against an Oakland Park strip club, alleging the bouncers’ blows ruined their Easter Day 2003 wedding and Bahamas honeymoon.

“Unfortunately, because of the injuries he suffered and because of the brutality of the beating, he was unable to fully enjoy his honeymoon,” said Jonathan Yellin, the couple’s attorney.

Schroeder said there was no romance on the couple’s wedding night because he was in too much pain. Among the Coral Springs couple’s claims in their lawsuit is that Amanda was denied “love, affection, companionship, care and support” as a result of her husband’s injuries.

“As much as I wanted to enjoy my wedding and the reception, it ruined the whole wedding,” he said. “As much as I wanted to stay and have a good time, I wanted just to lay down. I wasn’t able to enjoy seeing everyone.”

The couple refinanced their house to pay for the 200-person wedding they had been planning for two years, Amanda Schroeder said. Their lawsuit, filed June 16 in Broward Circuit Court, seeks an unspecified amount in damages from the former Pure Platinum, 3411 N. Federal Highway. The strip club changed its name last year to Spearmint Rhino, but is still under the same owner — Ocala businessman David Carter.

Carter said Schroeder’s friends caused the ruckus when one of them grabbed a stripper and wouldn’t let go. He said he finds it suspicious that when Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the club that night, Schroeder never talked to them or sought medical attention.

“I think they are just trying to get a big wedding present,” Carter said about the lawsuit. “We are not in the business to beat people up and run them off. We’re in the business to entertain people and have them come back.”

Carter said he won’t settle the case.

The lawsuit alleges problems arose at Schroeder’s bachelor party when one of his friends paid for a stripper to give the groom-to-be a lap dance and she took off with the money without giving a performance. The group was beginning to leave in protest when a Pure Platinum employee tackled Schroeder, causing him to slam his head into a table. The bouncer then got on top of him and began punching, he said.

Schroeder, 30, an aircraft mechanic, said a friend pried the bouncer off him, but another Pure Platinum employee started hitting him as he waited for police in the parking lot. He escaped and hid in a friend’s car.

Schroeder said he sought medical attention after his honeymoon and was diagnosed as having bulging discs in his neck that still cause him pain.

Sheriff’s Office reports indicate that when deputies arrived, Pure Platinum employees blamed the bachelor party for starting the fight, while Schroeder’s friends told deputies they were leaving the club when the bouncers began pushing them. No arrests were made that night, but three of Schroeder’s friends received a verbal trespass warning.

Schroeder’s name isn’t mentioned in the deputy’s report.
