But as far as we’re concerned, there’s still a matter of Sabrina Johnson’s mark of 2,000 set in 1999 which no one seems to be addressing. Meanwhile, Warsaw’s right-wing mayor Lech Kaczynski became embroiled this week in a battle with Catholic Poland’s sex industry by attempting to ban what was being billed as “The World Sex Championships”.
The organizers of Eroticon, an erotic fair in the Polish capital, last week defied an order from Kaczynski’s office and went ahead with the event. But Pink Press which hosted the four-day “Eroticon” festival, in cloak and dagger fashion, would not reveal time or place for the actual competition.
“The contest will take place,” declared Krzysztof Garwatowski, a spokesman for Pink Press, last week. Pink Press sells 60% of adult magazines and makes 80% of erotic films in Poland.
According to Garwatowski, the fair attracted more than 11,000 visitors last year. “With all this publicity the mayor has generated for us, we hope to do even better this year,” he added.
For days, large advertising posters for Eroticon featured photographs of two scantily-clad women. They had been plastered around the streets of Warsaw.
But Kaczynski’s office contacted the Warsaw public prosecutor’s office accusing the event’s organizers of procuring women, a crime carrying up to a ten-year jail term. Garwatowski said that he would sue Kaczynski for defamation.
“We are not breaking the law. We don’t see any reason why we should leave Warsaw just because a municipal official doesn’t like what we do,” insisted Garwatowski. “We have nothing to do with prostitution.”
Held in an exhibition center near the center of Warsaw, the Eroticon festival included some 20 booths offering adult films, books and slinky feminine lingerie in red and black.
Poland, where more than 90% of the population is Catholic, is a conservative society but pornography and sexual services are openly on sale.
“Everyone has the right to act as they choose,” said Garwatowski. “We are in a free country. Happily, the mayor of Warsaw does not have the power to stop us.”
Kaczynski has already waged a war against brothels, massage parlors and escort agencies which promote their services by slipping brochures under windshield wipers.
