Theater Settles Sex Harassment Suit

Tennessee- A Bartlett movie theater has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the agency has announced.

In its complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for Western Tennessee, the EEOC alleged that the Hollywood 20 theater subjected nine female employees, many of whom were teenagers, to sexual harassment by older managers and co-workers that included unwelcome sexual comments and unwelcome touching.

The female employees who were harassed were employed as ticket sellers and concession stand workers. The EEOC claimed that some of the employees resigned to avoid further harassment.

Hollywood 20 denied the allegations and stated that it is committed to providing a workplace that is free of harassment.

The EEOC says it filed suit after efforts to reach a voluntary pre-litigation settlement failed.

“This case demonstrates the importance of EEOC’s Youth at Work Initiative” says Danny Harter, district director for the EEOC in Memphis. “Teenage workers are often unaware of their rights in the workplace. With this settlement we are satisfied that this employer has strengthened its policies and procedures since these unfortunate incidents occurred.”

In addition to the monetary settlement, Hollywood 20 will be required to provide extra training for all of its employees concerning sexual harassment.

Ajay Theatres, which owns the Hollywood 20, also owns the Palace Cinema in Memphis and two movie theaters, the Hollywood 16 and the Jackson 10 in Jackson, Tenn.
