The Dan Miller interview with The Huffington Post reminds me of an arbitration meeting I attended years ago.
The squabble was between Danny Mamane, the new owner of Caballero and Howie Klein, the former owner. I wasn’t privy to the details of the whole thing except AVN owner Paul Fishbein, because he probably couldn’t do it with a straight face, had me go in his place to offer some nonsense about stats on the porn business.
AVN in its year-end buyer’s guide used to put out these elaborate pie charts and other economic bushwah about the multi-billion dollar porn industry. All fiction.
There was not one substantial or corroborating piece of evidence from any sector to support the conclusions that porn was the biggest show on earth. I knew it. The funny thing is the arbitrator knew it as well and told me to my face – in legal talk- that all this was a bunch of crap.
Forbes Magazine years ago did a piece in which it said AVN’s figures were a bunch of crap. And now Dan Miller, who used to work for AVN but is now with XBiz is offering The Huffington Post the same bunch of crap. A lot of what I read on The Huffington Post is a bunch of crap so Miller’s spiel falls in the same line.
Those stats in AVN were all figments of Fishbein’s fertile imagination. After all, he wanted your advertising dollars and what better way but to create a Zero Mostel production [The Producers] in which you could buy 500% of 100%.
That’s another reason why the adult industry is in the bind it’s in today. Fishbein put out the word that there was gold in them thar hills and all the suckers came to Porn Valley thinking it was Sutter’s Mill all over again. The New California Gold Rush.
What we got was more companies than the distributors could support and more product than anyone could possibly watch. But what do I know.
