Attorney Michael Fattorosi posts at www.adultbizlaw.com – On September 5th I authored an article advocating that performers should make their voice heard on the issue of mandatory condoms.
On November 6th, Los Angeles County voters will go to the polls and decide this issue for the adult industry. There is only 58 days to either oppose or support this Ballot Measure B. While there are others that are rallying against condoms (Free Speech Coalition) and those that are in support (AIDs Healthcare Foundation), this is really a performer and producer issue.
The public should not be deciding this issue. Do not let others shape this issue for you whether you are a producer or talent. It is your content. It’s your body and health.
If you are a performer you might actually have more followers on Twitter then some of the news media outlets listed below. It’s time to use that following for something more. Use your “star power” to write an editorial letter or even be booked as a guest on a news/talk radio show. If you have a publicist this is the perfect job for them.
If you are a producer/director you are in a unique situation. Most news outlets rarely get to speak to an actual “pornographer,” you are a rare breed. As a business owner in adult you can speak to issues unique to the business of porn, ie., the costs of the permit system, the enforcement procedures and the effect it may have on your sales. You alone are in the position to address those issues.
If you are in the role of support staff, ie., make-up artists, agents, photographers, production assistants, you can certainly talk about how Ballot Measure B will impact your career and earning potential as well. Perhaps you might discuss how it may drive the industry out of California which would result in unemployment and less tax revenue for the County and state.
And if you are a supporter or fan of the industry you too should have your voice heard. The vast majority of fans do not live in Los Angeles County, but our government has decided that the Los Angeles voter should decide how your porn is made. Whether you believe condoms ruin the “fantasy” or performers should be protected make your voice heard.
Below is a list of newspapers, blogs, news/talk radio shows and the contact information for each. I have tried to include links, email addresses, phone numbers and even Twitter handles, where possible. This is of course not a comprehensive list. There are more media outlets that I did not provide information about.
I only provided those that specifically cover Los Angeles County. Of course you can also try submitting an article to the Huffington Post, Daily Beast and even Gawker. All have run stories about the condom issue. I also did not include FM radio station shows since you will probably need to be “booked” onto those shows.
You will probably have the most success writing editorial letters and opinion pieces for newspapers. However, be aware that there is usually word limits of 150 to 700 words for most letters or op-ed pieces. And some newspapers such as the LA Times require that they have exclusivity of any Op-Ed letter you may submit.
