TEMPLE CITY, California - Two years ago, Melissa Huff's right leg was stolen from her when a driver lost control and plowed a car into her.
Tuesday afternoon, Melissa, 16, came home to find her leg stolen - again.
The Arcadia High School sophomore's prosthetic leg was taken from the family home in the 1000 block of Olive Street around 1:30 p.m., said her father, David.
Along with the leg, school fund-raising scrip worth about $1,500, some video games and other items were also missing, Huff said, adding that the thief cut a hole in a window screen to enter.
The stolen leg is a special shock absorbent "sports leg" with a flexible foot that allows Melissa to play softball. She has other prosthetic legs, including the one she was wearing the day of the burglary, but none of them are designed for sports or fit as comfortably as the stolen leg.
"That sucks what people do sometimes," she said.
David Huff puts the cost of the leg at around $5,000 to $7,000, but said it isn't resalable because it is custom made.
"It's not something you can just sell on the street," said Temple Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Phillips. "Something like that, it's just cruel."
Huff was standing in front of Dana Middle School in Arcadia at the beginning of her eighth- grade year when a driver lost control, drove onto the sidewalk and hit her, her father said. Melissa's right leg had to be amputated right below the knee.
But just four months after her accident, Melissa was back on the field, playing first base for Temple City Little League, with the help of her prosthetic leg. That year, the team even won a league championship.
"She turned out to be one heck of a first baseman," David Huff said. "She just did not want to get out of the game."
Huff has not been playing sports lately because she recently had corrective surgery, but is eager to get back on the field.
"It's really frustrating, because I've had to strive and work hard to get back on my feet," she said.
"I want (the thief) to know there is a girl standing at home wishing to play softball, and now her favorite sports leg is gone."
