Binghamton University to Pay $280,000 in Sex Harassment Suit; A Sex Toy to Get Alumni Money

Looks like attorney Anne Vladeck is becoming the east coast Gloria Allred.

BINGHAMTON, NY from www.wicz.com – Elizabeth Williams, the former Binghamton University athletics fundraiser who alleges she was used as a sexual “plaything,” has reached a $280,000 dollar settlement with Binghamton University. After attorney fees, Williams will receive $140,000 dollars, about two years salary.

In July 2009, Williams filed a sexual harassment lawsuit in Manhattan against Binghamton University, two senior members of the athletic department, Jason Siegel and Chris Lewis, and two donors from New York City.

“To pay the plaintiff, Ms. Williams any money on such a frivolous and groundless claim is disappointing for Jason, but I know the university was very concerned about the growing defense costs of the case, and from that perspective I can see why an early resolution of the matter made sense to them,” said David Gouldin of Levene, Gouldin and Thompson. Gouldin is the attorney representing Jason Siegel.

In a statement, Binghamton University said that while it was confident in its legal position, litigation would have been costly, time consuming and distracting.

Binghamton University Interim President C. Peter Magrath said the following in a statement: “This settlement enables us to turn the page and put this issue behind us.”

According to the settlement agreement, Williams agreed to resign and to not reapply for a position with B.U., or any organization affiliated with B.U., such as the Research Foundation or any university foundation. Williams is also prohibited from working for any BU vendor or contractor or Binghamton Foundations affiliated with the university.

Siegel and Lewis said in a joint statement that now that all claims have been dropped they can continue to focus on the management of a strong athletics department.

“The resolution reached by the state, which did not attribute any fault or liability, allows us to continue working on behalf of the great student-athletes, teams and coaches at Binghamton University.”

Williams accused Siegel and Lewis of exploiting her sexuality to raise money. Williams’ attorney is Anne Vladeck, the same attorney who won $11.5 million dollars in a sexual harassment lawsuit against ex-New York Knicks coach Isiah Thomas.

Vladeck’s firm, Vladeck, Waldman, Elias & Engelhard, P.C., issued the following statement:

“Elizabeth Williams is very pleased with the settlement of her claims against SUNY Binghamton and the individuals involved. She hopes and believes, as do we, that it will send a message. She is looking forward to moving on to the next chapter in her life.”

Defendant Larry Hollander has also agreed to drop his suit, which claimed Williams lied when she accused him of offering money to sleep with him and making other unwanted sexual advances. At an alumni dinner in New York City, Williams claimed she was propositioned by Hollander and Michael Marcus, another defendant in the case.

As part of the agreement, Williams agreed to work off campus until the state approved the payment.

A Binghamton University investigation into the matter found no testimony to support Williams’ allegations.
