So it’s no surprise the outspoken advocate of human sexuality is one of the guests at Contamination 2011, a horror, science fiction and cult convention taking place at the Westport Sheraton Friday through Sunday.
Before the convention, Hamilton spoke with Maryland Heights Patch.
Hamilton’s career defies the usual stereotypes about adult film actresses. She majored in theater arts in college. She called her parents before filming her first adult scene. She has a great relationship with her two sons and reunited with her high school sweetheart via Facebook after her husband’s death.
“I’m not what anyone expects,” Hamilton said with a laugh. “People think you can’t choose sex work. They think it’s a last minute, desperate measure, not a choice. It’s portrayed that way on television and in documentaries because it’s so much more dramatic. Think about it. On reality shows, even the stupid ones where they’re flipping houses, you need to have that drama. My god, will those floors ruin his chance to sell? Oh no! If you’re doing a documentary on women who are hot and smart and choose this business because they like having sex, then it probably won’t be that interesting, so they pick the horror stories.”
Hamilton said Jenna Jamison’s book How to Make Love Like A Porn Star gave the profession more mainstream appeal
“Sure, there are some sleazy guys out there who want to take advantage of women....I’ve seen many women come into the business with their suitcase pimp or their husband who has a fantasy about watching his wife with porn stars. The gals find themselves in the business, they find their power and find they do have something to offer. Nine times out of 10 they leave their agent and go on to become powerful women who are wonderful sexual beings with self-esteem, myself included. Working in the industry really chilled me out.”
She laughed at the idea the fans who come to see her at cult conventions are probably picturing her naked. “I hope so! In fact, some of them still proposition me.”
She said her fans typically belong to one of three groups. “If they’re older, they saw me in a movie theater when my movies were first being made. If they’re younger than 50, which is the majority of people who come to these conventions, they’re kids who saw my movies when they were going through puberty and snuck into their father’s pornography stash. I stayed with them because I was one of their first libido crushes. Then there are the sweet, young nerds, the ones who are fans of the '80s movies and retro culture.”
Hamilton said she thoroughly enjoyed her days as both an actress and producer. She’s still working in the industry as the Associate Curator of Erotic Folklore at the Erotic Heritage Museum in Las Vegas.
“I also work the register and give tours,” she said. “Anyone coming to Las Vegas should stop in. It’s a big, educational facility staffed by clinical psychologists, sexologists, and one pornographer: me.”
As the director of new media, she isn’t in charge of the museum’s Facebook page or Twitter feed. “For us, new media refers to documentaries, the business history of pornography, the history of the sexual revolution and information about the people who made sex available and part of our mainstream culture.”
Besides her museum work, Hamilton is also using Kickstarter to raise funds for an upcoming movie tentatively titled Rose: The Zombie Bizarro Musical.
“Rose is an ex mental patient with her own Los Angeles variety show. The movie starts two days into the zombie apocalypse. In between singing with her puppets and telling people how to get to rescue stations, she goes out and kicks zombie butt with her tiny crew of cameramen. It’s got zombies and puppets. It’s awesome.”
Hamilton laughed when asked about the most interesting part of her career in the adult industry. “I think my entire career is absurd,” she said. “It’s ridiculous that people care whether other people screw. In a well-adjusted world, who would care who I’m having sex with, and who would want to watch it? I’m amazed I’ve been able to raise a family and have a decent standard of living off something that shouldn’t be any big deal at all.”
She compared pornography to reality television. “Stop watching other people have lives. You want adventure? You want to screw a pretty girl? Shut off your TV, get out of your house and do it. Have real adventures of your own. That’s what life is all about.”
